Ketamine treatment
Ketamine is not FDA-approved specifically for OCD. Research is preliminary, and a response to ketamine in depression does not establish that it treats OCD. Ask a clinician about exposure and response prevention, medication and the evidence and risks for any off-label option.
Tell us a little about you. A care coordinator will match you with a ketamine clinic near you.

Known for its historic mill district and coastal beauty, the city serves as a primary center for healthcare and services in the region alongside its twin city, Saco. Ketamine administered through intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), or sublingual routes is frequently utilized off-label for psychiatric conditions. Because these specific formulations are not FDA-approved for mental health treatments, most insurance plans do not provide coverage, making these services primarily out-of-pocket expenses. Patients should request a comprehensive written estimate before beginning a treatment series. Additionally, because the FDA warns patients and health care providers about potential risks associated with compounded ketamine products, prospective patients must thoroughly evaluate the clinical setting and the required financial commitment, which often includes the cost of repeated travel to regional clinics.
Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray indicated for specific adult depression diagnoses, including treatment-resistant depression. Unlike compounded ketamine, Spravato is more frequently eligible for insurance coverage, though it often requires strict prior authorization steps from your health plan. Patients should carefully review their coverage limits, potential deductibles, and co-pays. Furthermore, because treatment requires a minimum of two hours of in-office monitoring and prohibits driving until the following day, individuals must factor in the logistical costs of securing a responsible adult for transportation to and from the clinical facility.
Accessing specialized psychiatric therapies requires significant logistical planning. The initial process typically includes a comprehensive plan assessment, followed by multiple weekly visits during the induction phase. Utilizing Spravato mandates administration in a certified medical setting, followed by at least two hours of clinical observation. Patients are strictly prohibited from driving until the next day after a restful sleep, necessitating a responsible adult to provide transportation. When planning regional travel from Biddeford to Portland-area clinics, residents must account for Maine's unpredictable weather, including winter snow and ice, severe storms, and seasonal coastal traffic that can complicate travel distances.
While telehealth platforms can assist with initial consultations and follow-up assessments, they do not replace the need for in-person treatment. Spravato is never administered at home under any circumstances. Although some clinicians prescribe off-label compounded ketamine formulations for home use, these are not FDA-approved for psychiatric care, and the FDA has issued warnings regarding the risks of administration without on-site medical monitoring. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis should immediately seek local emergency support. You can reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 available 24/7, or contact emergency services at 911.
The primary step is scheduling a consultation with your current mental health provider or primary care physician in Biddeford. They can review your psychiatric history, determine if you meet the criteria for treatment-resistant depression, and provide referrals to specialized regional clinics in the Portland area offering these services.
Currently, there are no directory-listed clinics offering ketamine or Spravato therapies physically located within Biddeford. However, residents frequently access these specialized treatments by traveling slightly north to regional facilities in Portland and South Portland, which offer both FDA-approved Spravato treatment and off-label ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.
Coverage heavily depends on the type of treatment and your specific insurance plan. Off-label intravenous or sublingual ketamine is generally not covered and requires self-pay. Conversely, FDA-approved Spravato for treatment-resistant depression may be covered, though patients typically must complete a strict prior authorization process first.
Maine's winter weather, including heavy snow and ice storms, can significantly impact travel from Biddeford to regional clinics. Because treatments require multiple weekly visits and strict transportation rules, patients should discuss contingency plans and flexible scheduling policies with their clinic to ensure safe and continuous care.
Following a Spravato session, you must undergo at least two hours of clinical observation and are not permitted to drive until the following day. Clinics typically require that you be driven home by a known, responsible adult; public transit or rideshares without an escort are generally unacceptable.
Spravato must always be administered in a certified clinical setting and is never permitted for home use. While some providers may prescribe compounded off-label ketamine formulations for home administration, the FDA strictly warns against this practice due to the inherent medical risks of unmonitored home use.
Costs, coverage & aftercare
IV, IM and compounded ketamine for psychiatric conditions are off-label; many programs are self-pay. Ask about assessment, medication, administration, monitoring, therapy and maintenance charges separately. We do not assume a statewide price.
Spravato is FDA-approved esketamine, not the same as ketamine infusions. Coverage is not guaranteed. Check eligibility, prior authorization, network status, drug and visit charges, deductibles and copays with your insurer and clinic.
Spravato requires a certified healthcare setting and monitoring for at least two hours. Arrange transport home; do not drive until the next day after restful sleep. For other ketamine treatments, follow your clinician's instructions. Follow-up and maintenance depend on response and tolerability.
Ask who manages your medications, how your usual clinician will receive updates, and whom to contact between visits. Neither a shortage designation nor local depression statistics show that ketamine is appropriate or effective for you. Consult a licensed physician.
Use these questions when you call or book a consultation with any Biddeford provider.
Ask whether a physician, psychiatrist or anesthesiologist oversees each session and who you can reach afterward.
A good clinic reviews your history, medications, blood pressure and past treatments before recommending ketamine.
Look for continuous vital-sign monitoring and a calm, private recovery space.
IV infusions, Spravato® nasal spray, IM or sublingual options suit different goals and budgets.
Ask how the clinic coordinates with your therapist or offers integration support between sessions.
Request a written estimate for the first series and any maintenance sessions before you start.
